HALAAL CERTIFICATION OF ENTERPRISES

PLEASE NOTE THAT AS OF 1ST JUNE 2022  A SERVICE FEE WILL BE CHARGED FOR HALAL CERTTIFICATION SERVICES.

AN APPLICATION FEE OF RS200 IS ALSO APPLICABLE ON EACH APPLICATION. NOTE THAT THE APPLICATION FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE,

IT IS DUE TO BE PAID IN CASH UPON THE INITIAL INSPECTION OF THE PREMISES. 

Hereunder find an overview of JUM's Guidelines and Core Protocols for the Certification
of Restaurants:

1. Privately Owned (non-franchised) Restaurants :

- Such outlet must be owned and operated by Muslim persons of established integrity.

- Where the integrity of a Muslim owner/s is questionable, then the additional requirements
and monitoring controls applicable to non-Muslim owned restaurants shall be applied in such
instance.

- All menu items, products, raw materials etc. must be screened and approved at the point of
application and/or inspection.

- It shall be made emphatically clear to the owner/s that any intended changes to the menu,
raw material and/or supplier changes etc. shall be submitted to JUM office in writing
for approval at least 21 days prior to introduction.

- New product launches and promotional products too shall be subject to prior notification to
the JUM office and written approval being obtained.

- For ease of identification, all raw materials, products etc. received by the outlet shall be
clearly marked & labelled prior to delivery from the approved supplier/s.

- Whilst generally, a minimum once a month audit is conducted at such Muslim-owned and
operated restaurants, the audit frequency may be increased depending on the specific and
special circumstances applicable either at the time of application or which may become
necessary at a later stage.

- All audits shall be of an impromptu nature and no notification shall be given to the outlet.

- Auditors shall be given immediate unhindered access to all areas of the outlet premises.

- The authorised JUM representatives shall be given access to scrutinize all invoices,
delivery notes etc. to verify and cross check purchases against stock on hand.

- All provisions and conditions of certification be clearly encapsulated in the agreement
contract.

- An agreement contract shall be entered into with the applicant which shall clearly outline all
the conditions under which Certification is being awarded.

- Approved menus, raw materials, products and/or suppliers must be added as an Annexure to
the agreement contract so that the parties are aware of the prescribed and agreed upon
perimeters.

- Once the outlet is awarded Halaal Certification, the registered Halaal logo may be used on
shopfronts, menus, advertising material etc. provided that all draft artwork is submitted to the
JUM offices and written approval & sign-off is obtained.

- Alcoholic beverages may not be sold, served or permitted on the Halaal certified premises.

- Neither the owner nor the staff are permitted to bring their own food into the certified outlet
premises.

- Under no circumstances are any personal items allowed to be stored on the certified
premises even for a short period.

-  Any enterprise applying for a Halal certificate must have a designated area for the production, preparation & storage of food items, which should be open and accessible to our auditors for inspections and surprise visits. Applications will not be considered for those that use their private domicile for storing ingredients, products, and food production or cooking.

- As a rule, JUM does not certify non-Muslim owned private restaurants. Where there is
an exigent Muslim community need, then in such instance, however, the Theological

Management may consider such application as an exception, subject to consistent daily on-
site Muslim supervisory criteria, frequent audits etc. and other preconditions and criteria, as

may be determined according to the specific circumstances.
