Allah's Messenger said: "There are three whose Salat would not rise up beyond their ears: The runaway slave until he returns, a woman who spends a night while her husband is angry with her, and a people's Imam whom they dislike."
ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﺇﺳﻤﺎﻋﻴﻞ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﻠﻲ ﺑﻦ ﺍﻟﺤﺴﻦ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺍﻟﺤﺴﻴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻭﺍﻗﺪ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺃﺑﻮ ﻏﺎﻟﺐ، ﻗﺎﻝ ﺳﻤﻌﺖ ﺃﺑﺎ ﺃﻣﺎﻣﺔ، ﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﻗﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ " ﺛﻼﺛﺔ ﺗﺠﺎﻭﺯ ﺻﻼﺗﻬﻢ ﺁﺫﺍﻧﻬﻢﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﺍﻵﺑﻖ ﺣﺘﻰ ﻳﺮﺟﻊ ﻭﺍﻣﺮﺃﺓ ﺑﺎﺗﺖ ﻭﺯﻭﺟﻬﺎ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ ﺳﺎﺧﻂ ﻭﺇﻣﺎﻡ ﻗﻮﻡ . " ﻭﻫﻢ ﻟﻪ ﻛﺎﺭﻫﻮﻥ ﻗﺎﻝ ﺃﺑﻮ ﻋﻴﺴﻰ ﻫﺬﺍ ﺣﺪﻳﺚ ﺣﺴﻦ ﻏﺮﻳﺐ ﻣﻦ ﻫﺬﺍ ﺍﻟﻮﺟﻪ . ﻭﺃﺑﻮ . ﻏﺎﻟﺐ ﺍﺳﻤﻪ ﺣﺰﻭﺭ

Answer

Wa alaikumus salaam Warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh

According to the explanations given by the muhaditheen (scholars of hadith), this hadith applies to such an imam whom the public dislike due to him being involved in some reprehensible acts of the shariah, such as innovations or transgression of religious teachings, etc. This does not apply to a hatred which is based on personal arguments or worldly motives.
